Dear Eastminster Church Family,
The apostle Paul begins our stewardship season theme verses with the words, “We want you to know, brothers and sisters…” I join with the Steward-ship Team in eagerly inviting you to continue the path of a faithful steward. Our theme this year is Abundant Joy, Overflowing Generosity with a focus on 2 Corinthians 8:1-7. Here we read Paul’s encouragement to be generous.
We want you to know, brothers and sisters, about the grace of God that has been granted to the churches of Macedonia; for during a severe ordeal of affliction, their abundant joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For, as I can testify, they voluntarily gave according to their means, and even beyond their means, begging us earnestly for the privilege of sharing in this ministry to the saints— and this, not merely as we expected; they gave themselves first to the Lord and, by the will of God, to us, so that we might urge Titus that, as he had already made a beginning, so he should also complete this generous undertaking among you. Now as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you—so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking.
Paul commended a people who first “gave themselves to the Lord” prior to presenting their offerings. This approach invites us to begin by giving our entire selves to the Lord. We can do this by considering the Giving Our Day, the Giving Our Worship, the Giving of Our Spiritual Gifts, and the Giving of Our Resources. I will be offering a several video devotionals that will go out with the Friday emails this month to encourage us in our pondering the many ways we can give to the Lord.
Celebration weekend is Saturday/Sunday is November 21st/22nd. Watch for your letter from the Stewardship Team in which you will find an estimate of giving card. After prayerful consideration, please fill out the card and bring it to worship with you that day or mail it or drop it by the church office.
We are witnesses to God’s goodness known to us in Jesus Christ—throughout our community, across this nation, and around the world. Again, we turn to Paul, who wrote, “Now, as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you—so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking.”
Let us with abundant joy offer our overflowing generosity as we seek to be witnesses of Our Lord in this place.
